Protect Yourself from
Identity Theft and Phishing Scams
Many
financial institutions have reported that their customers have received e-mails
claiming to be from their bank or credit union. These emails typically contain
a link to a fraudulent website that looks exactly like their financial
institutions legitimate website. This type of fraudulent activity is known as
“phishing”.
Remember we will never ask for security information via your email, such as
“name, account number, password, PIN or social security number”. If you doubt
the authenticity of any email you receive do not reply or do not click on any
links in the message.
Here is
an example of a phishing email attempt:
Dear Credit Union Customer
We detected
irregular activity on your account. For your security, your online profile has
been locked due to inactivity or because of too many failed login attempts.
You can unlock your
bank profile online.
Please Click Here to unlock your bank account profile.
If you receive any email
requesting any personal information, please notify Big Valley Federal Credit
Union immediately by calling 800-232-2626 extension 1144.
Steps you can take in
keeping your confidential information safe:
1.
Keep your
computer security software updated with the most current patches provided by the
software manufacturer.
2.
Protect your
personal information:
a.
Be suspicious
of any email asking for any personal information.
b.
Never reply to
suspicious or unexpected email requesting you to change or supply information
regarding your account.
c.
If you are
uncertain about the email contact the company that you know to be genuine.
d.
Never provide
financial information to anyone via email.
3.
If you feel
that you have supplied personal or financial information on your account contact
us at 800-232-2626 or 916-383-0691 extension 1144.
Forward suspicious emails to
the Federal Trade Commission at
spam@uce.gov and file phishing complaints with the State Attorney General’s
office or through the Federal Trade Commission at
www.ftc.gov.
